Problem Solving, Reasoning And Numeracy
At Liverpool Nursery, we aim to help children develop early mathematical skills by providing a variety of engaging activities that introduce basic concepts of counting, shapes, and patterns. Children are encouraged to count objects up to 10 and beyond, helping them build a strong foundation for numeracy.
For younger children, we use shape sorters and jigsaws to help them explore shapes, sizes, and patterns, fostering early understanding of mathematical concepts. Songs and rhymes are used to introduce numbers, and we regularly count up and down with the children, incorporating numbers into daily routines and play.
Staff actively count with children during all activities, ensuring that counting becomes a natural part of their learning. Numbers are displayed around the nursery, further familiarizing children with number symbols and their meanings.
We also introduce key mathematical language to help children understand comparisons and measurements, using terms like bigger, smaller, taller, shorter, long, heavy, light, full, and empty. This approach allows children to make connections between words and numbers, helping them develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.
